Inspiration

For type class, we are pretty much trying to define ourselves as designers, which has got me thinking a lot...maybe a little too much since I barely have any work done. I feel like right now, I really dont know for sure who I am as a designer which should be fairly acceptable considering I am only a junior in college. Every project that I do, I try to make better than the last and sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesnt. Sometimes life simply gets in the way and makes it hard for me to be the designer that I want to be, which may not seem like a good excuse, but I think everyone knows how hard life can be sometimes and how it can make it seem like everything is going to fall apart. Im not exactly sure what the point of this post was...but ya. back to type homework..

Before class on Thursday, I had never heard of graphicexchange.com, I am still trying to become familiar with a lot of different websites. But, after looking around the site for awhile, I was able to find tons of exciting and inspiring designs, posted and added by various designers. It is a great website because it is always changing and evolving, and they have a great section on identity systems. With the identity systems, they are not only showing the results, but also the process which is very important to design, especially identity design. I think I could look around this website for days, but then I wouldn't get any of my own work done.
The first couple weeks of classes were pretty rough, I didn't realize how quickly you can get out of the habit of design. After spending an entire summer making care packages, I was not prepared to jump into our first Graphics project so quickly. Over the summer I did take a Digital Photography class which ended up being more of a Photoshop class, so I did do one small design project through that class, but other than that, nothing. I really had to force myself to just sit down and look through magazines and websites just to get some inspiration, and I feel like now after a couple weeks of a struggling I can just begin to focus and work hard, creating some exciting results.
Here is a fun link that my Dad, who loves to spend hours on the internet sent to me. Although it is dealing more with environmental graphic design and advertising, it gave me some inspiration for logo and identity design.

Some of the key points that I picked out of the second reading assignment include:
-Try to find metaphors that capture pyschological essence more that simply eternal reality.
-Line, shape, value, texture, and color, are used to represent the values of the client.
-When abstracting something, it is not about eliminating details, but instead focusing on specific details.
-Humans see themselves in everything.
-One's choice in style can have consequences far beyond the "look of a story."
This reading was very interesting because it provides the viewer with great visual evidence of the points it is trying to make. It not only shows, but it also tells.

Graphic Design: Reading 1
1. When creating a logo, how can you ensure that what you have developed will be understandable for all audiences?
2. Why is it so important for a company to have a mark? How would a company survive without a mark?
